Born in Rochester, NY, US-American soprano Sara De Franco is currently based in Karlsruhe, Germany. In the 2025/26 Season, Sara debuts at the BADISCHES STAATSTHEATER KARLSRUHE in the role of Polymnie in Rameau’s Les Boréades and can also be heard as one of the 8 Damen in Lohengrin and as a Carmelite (Anne of the Cross) in Dialogues des Carmélites.

Sara also returned this season to THEATER FREIBURG to reprise her role of Oberto in Händel’s Alcina. She has recently completed her training as a member of the Theater Freiburg Opera Studio in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. In the 2024/25 Season, she debuted the roles of Rosée-du-Soir-Roland (Offenbach’s Le roi carotte), Oberto (Alcina),Pastuchyna (Jenufa), and revived the roles of Papagena (Game On: Zauberflöte) and Die Mutter (Die Operntode meiner Mutter). A highlight of her time in Freiburg includes a jump in as Pamina for the closing night of Game On: Zauberflöte.

In the 2023/24 Season at Theater Freiburg, Sara debuted the roles of Papagena (Game On: Zauberflöte), April (Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company), A Voice from Heaven (Don Carlo), Das Taumännchen (Hänsel und Gretel), and Die Mutter in the German premiere of Die Operntode meiner Mutter with Theater Freiburg’s Junges Theater, based off the children’s book Die Tode meiner Mutter by Carla Haslbauer. She also jumped in to perform the role of Das Sandmännchen (Hänsel und Gretel) and was also a guest soloist at Theater Basel, where she sang alongside the OperAvenir studio artists in a staged performance of operetta scenes titled OperettAvenir.

Alongside opera, Sara is a budding concert soloist, with repertoire including Händel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Hör mein Bitten, Mozart’s Great Mass in C-Minor, Saint-Saëns Requiem, Rossini’s Petite messe solenelle, Mozart’s Missa brevis in D-Major, and more. While studying, she had the opportunity to jump in as the Soprano Soloist in Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem for the final dress rehearsal with the Freiburger Bachchor and Bachorchester in collaboration with the University Chorus and Orchestra as well as the Freiburger Domsingknaben. Also during her time at the Freiburg Hochschule für Musik, Sara was selected to sing in a unique Liederabend, where she sang a selection of songs by french composer Poldowski. As a choral singer, Sara has performed with the Ensemble Messiaen as well as the Anton-Webern-Chor in and around Freiburg.

Sara premiered in her first opera at 18 with the ROCHESTER LYRIC OPERA: CHAMBER SERIES, singing the titular role in Menotti’s Amelia al ballo. In July 2023, she completed her Master of Music in Freiburg at the HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK FREIBURG in the studio of Katharina Kutsch. While studying, she sang the roles of Baronin Freimann (Der Wildschütz), Maguelonne (Pauline Viardot’s Cendrillon), and a Student (Franz von Suppé’s Bocaccio). She completed her Bachelor of Music in her hometown at the EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC in the studio of Robert Swensen. At Eastman, Sara sang the roles of Nora (Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea), a Spirit (Massenet’s Cendrillon), and Camille Claudel in a staged production of Jake Heggie’s song cycle Camille Claudel: Into the Fire, working closely with the composer Jake Heggie and lyricist Gene Scheer. While studying at Eastman, Sara also sang in the chorus of FINGER LAKES OPERA for the productions of Tosca, La Traviata, and Carmen (where she was also a featured dancer). Along with her sister, soprano Carley De Franco, she has performed numerous recitals in Rochester, NY.

As winner of the ARCO Special Prize in the 2023 International Mozart Competition in Salzburg, Sara travelled to Marseille to participate in the Art, Research and Creation Opus 2023 to study and perform a wide variety of contemporary music under the tutelage of renowned singer, composer, and author Valérie Phillippin. In addition to this award, she has also received both 2nd Prize in KINGS PEAK INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION and the Phyllis Bryn-Julson Award (2nd prize) in the CIVIC MORNING MUSICALS COMPETITION in 2020.

In addition to her education at the Eastman School of Music, Sara also graduated in 2019 with a Master of Science in Sustainability after completing her thesis on Social Sustainability from the UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER. She completed her Konzertexamen Oper degree (post-graduate degree in Opera) at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in July 2025.
